From July to Nomber 1916, the Somme was the scene of a series of bloody military engagements, interspersed with trench actions of dreadful intensity. In its entirety, the conflict alond the Somme scarred the story of a whole generation, becoming recorded by historians as the graveyard of the flower of British manhood.
