Gerald Durrell made a special study of Zoology during the time that the family settled in Corfu, where they lived until 1939. He kept a large number of local animals as pets. In 1945 het joined the staff of Whipsnade Zoo as a student keeper, and in 1974 financed, organised and led an animal-collecting expedition to the Cameroons.
